Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary provides a permanent refuge for abused, neglected and elderly donkeys. Here they are given the opportunity to live out their lives with respect and dignity, surrounded by their own kind, in a protective and natural environment.

Six years ago, Dr Johan & Annemarie van Zijl of McGregor village in the Western Cape of South Africa responded to a request from the SPCA to provide shelter for two neglected donkeys.

The mission of Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary is to provide care for abused, neglected and elderly donkeys and to create a culture of respect for all living creatures. Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary is registered as a not-for-profit organisation (NPO) and a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO)

The establishment of the sanctuary has led to the creation of jobs for both skilled and unskilled workers in a region with massive unemployment.

One of the ways you can help is to adopt a donkey for a year to help towards the costs of our work. You choose the amount you wish to give to your donkey.

You will receive:
• details of the donkey you decide to adopt
• a photo
• an adoption certificate
• a twice yearly report; and
• our quarterly news letter.

And you are most welcome to come and visit your special donkey!

Adoption makes an ideal anniversary, birthday, special occasion or Christmas present
