Bonnievale is a small country village situated along the banks of the Breede River. It is surrounded by the Langeberge and Riversonderend Mountains. What makes it unique is that it is the only town in South Africa that can offer you an abundance of cheese, wine and river scenery all in one.The typical old farm scenes date back from its noble beginning at the end of the 1800’s. Bonnievale has a lovely history - how one man, against all odds, tamed the Breede River by building a 35km long water channel, to supply the rich soil with enough water for sustainable farming. Most of the town still gets its water from this source to this day, which is why the little town sits in the centre of all the vineyards. For a tourist, the 64km scenic circle route along the Breede River and adjacent countryside is a must. The scenery offers hectares of vineyards, cows, fruit trees and stud farms, all with the river in constant sight. On this route you can visit our well known cheese factories, which manufacture more than a 100 tons of cheese a day, or stop over at one of the nine wine cellars for some great wine tasting. If you are hungry after all this activity, we offer 5 lovely restaurants in the area. Other attractions include the lovely Golf course, a Koi farm, boat trips on the river and 4x4 trips. Climate: Summers are hot with cool evening breezes. Winters are typical Cape winters, without the well-known South Easter!
